A to Z Challenge (2016) Goal Setting Mind Motivation Time

A2Z2016 – Juggling aka Multitasking

According to Dictionary.com, JUGGLING is defined as: to keep (several objects, as balls, plates, tenpins, or knives) in continuous motion in the air simultaneously by tossing and catching.

Have you ever tried juggling?   If so, how many objects can you keep in the air at one time?

I see juggling as synonymous with multitasking.  I use to brag about being good at multitasking –  that I was excellent with handling many tasks and projects at the same time.

My current experience as a Teaching Intern totally disproves that theory!  I tried (rather unsuccessfully) for the last three semesters to juggle an accelerated load of four classes at one time.  Initially, I felt like I had no choice in the  matter because – ‘it is what it is’.  This semester, I had to sit down and figure it out.  I quickly fell far behind due to my mother having spinal surgery at the beginning of the semester.

When you are faced with adversity you either figure it out or drop everything you are juggling.  Because I stay in BEAST MODE, failure is NOT an option!!!  So, I figured it out.  Focus on one class at a time for a specific time period, then shift to the next one and do that in a rotation.  I shifted from juggling many tasks to managing projects – easier to manage along with my nerves.  It is a mindset!

I believe that while you may appear effective multitasking, you may not be efficient; therefore, risking a loss of quality.  I like my 4.00 GPA, so I had to be both effective and efficient as an intern.

So I ask you how many objects can you keep in the air at one time?  Personally, I am content with tossing one up at a time.  That way, I maintain proper focus by keeping my eyes on it.

  1. I’m not multitasking all too much right now, but yes, I find keeping a journal and agenda help me balance out my time. It also helps with figuring out, for instance, I’m spending a lion’s share on Netflix when I should be doing something more productive.

I’m all about the accountability and honesty – keep it real so if I need to change, I’m less in denial mode and more in ‘up & at ’em, lazy-butt’ mode. ^_^

    1. Wow! Thanks for stopping by and keeping it real. I gave up cable television and I schedule my favorite shows in the calendar that I watch on Netflix and Hulu. I have to journal and make lists or NOTHING gets accomplished. Thank goodness we have tools, right?! 💝
