ACEs – Fear of physically being hurt…

ACEs Question #1

Did a parent or other adult in the household often or very often… Swear at you, insult you, put you down, or humiliate you? or Act in a way that made you afraid that you might be physically hurt?

My initial thoughts when reading this question for the first time were:

  • that’s just how my generation was raised…
  • “spare the rod, spoil the child”…
  • Momma wasn’t raised by her parents…
  • She didn’t receive love as a child either…

My mother and first step-father believed in corporal punishment.  It was nothing unusual to be whipped (not spanked) with a belt until I couldn’t sit or stand.

Now, many people still debate about whether or not it is necessary to use the rod in rearing a child.  I can tell you that it is sheer barbarism to a person who raised in that extreme manner.  My mother would tell you that she is the reason I turned out “so good” – until I upset her by not complying with her opinion or requests.

Unforgettable Memory

My stepfather was so angry at me for doing something.  I no longer remember what it was, but I do remember the buckle end of the belt hitting the back of my right hand. Blood squirted everywhere.  I ran under the kitchen table. Terrified and bleeding.  I was in the fourth grade (based on where we lived at the time).

It’s unforgettable because of the scar on the back of my hand.  A lifetime memory of a traumatic experience.

My answer to question #1 is YES.
