ACEs – Hit so hard that…

ACEs Question #2

Did a parent or other adult in the household often or very often… Push, grab, slap, or throw something at you? or Ever hit you so hard that you had marks or were injured?

Again, my mother believed in corporal punishment.  Therefore, she mentally justified her actions and condoned my stepfather’s actions as well – when it came to discipline.   She believed it was for my own good.

Mom had her own issues.  We will cover that soon enough in answering another ACEs question.

Unforgettable Memory

As a child, I was impulsive and often inquisitive. This memory is from my 3rd grade.  I remember because we lived across the street from the school.

When the police showed up to answer a neighbor’s call; my friends and I scattered on the block.  Mom was gone and my stepfather and his friends were sitting out back drinking alcohol and telling stories to one another.

I’m not sure why I decided to double back – but I did.  I vividly remember climbing in the window on the driver’s side of the police car in the middle of the street.

I was almost in! Suddenly, I was snatched out through the window and carried like a sack of potatoes over the shoulder of my stepfather to the house.

The route was taken through the back yard past a row of bushes.  My stepfather reached for a branch off of one of the bushes while successfully balancing me on his shoulders.  Before I knew it, I was being whipped about my rear and bare legs with a force that’s unforgettable.

When mom came home I was sitting in a chair watching blood oozing from my legs from tiny pin holes.

My stepfather failed to realize the branch was from a thorny rose bush.

My answer to question #2 is YES.
