Today, I awoke with unbelievable fire and pressure in my chest. It is a familiar feeling so I am not too concerned – just really uncomfortable. My esophagus is inflamed because I took Aleve for a toothache last night. I had also eaten some spicy food for dinner. I knew better! Definitely slipping when it comes to mindfulness.
The only nutrition I have had today is Maximum Strength Antacid Liquid. It’s after 8pm and the fire in my chest is finally starting to ease up. I have slept most of the day away hoping to wake up and it is gone. I’m so hungry.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the ring of muscle between the esophagus and stomach. Many people, including pregnant women, suffer from heartburn or acid indigestioncaused by GERD. Doctors believe that some people suffer from GERD due to a condition called hiatal hernia. In most cases, GERD can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes; however, some people may require medication or surgery.https://www.webmd.com/heartburn-gerd/guide/reflux-disease-gerd-1#1
My first major GERD experience caused me to go to the Emergency Room a few years ago. I thought I was having a heart attack. I did pretty well to manage it over the years until now. Today was a reminder of how important it is for me to be mindful of what I consume. Also, to get to an oral surgeon and have my wisdom teeth pulled – the reason for taking Aleve, to begin with.
Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day.
